Mariel Joan Capanna
Mariel Capanna uses fresco techniques to challenge the distinction between painting as art, as labor, as craft, and as folk form. She received her BFA and Certificate of Fine Art in 2012 from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she was awarded the Cresson Travel Scholarship. In 2013 she received a grant from the Kittredge Fund which supported a year-long road trip around the U.S. to study landscape and the aesthetics of American regionalism, and as a 2014 Independence Foundation Visual Arts Fellow she studied fresco painting in Florence, Italy with conservator Lorenzo Casamenti. She is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the Tacony LAB -- a project of the Free Library, the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, and Councilman Bobby Henon.
